Bank of Canada to Introduce Polymer Bills |
The Bank of Canada will begin circulating new polymer bank notes later this year. The new bills will have large and bold security features, including a combination of transparency and holography. The goal of the new design is to make them more difficult to counterfeit and allow businesses to more quickly and easily verify their legitimacy.
Compared to paper bank notes, polymer bills are expected to last at least 2.5 times longer, and be more resistant to tearing or becoming limp.
Circulation of the new polymer notes will begin with the $100 bill in November 2011. $50 and $20 bills will follow in 2012, with $10 and $5 notes being introduced in late 2013.
